Shape Extraordinary Lighting with Us

Founded in 1881, J.T. Kalmar GmbH is a leading manufacturer of bespoke decorative lighting for prestigious projects worldwide. Working with renowned architects, designers, shipyards, and interior design studios, we combine craftsmanship with advanced engineering to transform ambitious concepts into exceptional lighting solutions.

As a market leader in large-scale decorative lighting for the international cruise industry, we also deliver unique solutions for luxury hospitality, commercial, and residential projects.

At Kalmar, our engineers are involved throughout the entire product lifecycle—from concept and development to prototyping, testing, production, installation, and commissioning. This means you dont just design products on screen—you see your ideas become reality in some of the worlds most exciting projects.

To strengthen our team, we are looking for Design Engineers (m/f/d) at different experience levels, from junior to experienced engineers.

If you enjoy solving challenging engineering problems, developing unique products, and working in an international project environment, we would love to hear from you.

Aufgaben

As a Design Engineer, you will be involved throughout the complete development process—from the first customer concept to the final installed product.

Your responsibilities include:

  • Designing and developing bespoke lighting products, including crystal chandeliers, decorative luminaires, ceiling fixtures, pendant lights, wall fixtures, floor lamps, table lamps, and integrated lighting systems.
  • Developing technically sound, innovative, and cost-effective mechanical solutions while balancing performance, manufacturability, assembly, installation, serviceability, and project budgets.
  • Creating 2D and 3D CAD models, assemblies, and detailed production drawings using SolidWorks and AutoCAD.
  • Preparing complete engineering documentation throughout all phases of product development.
  • Selecting suitable materials, components, and manufacturing methods.
  • Participating in rapid prototyping, design verification, testing, troubleshooting, and continuous product improvement.
  • Collaborating with multidisciplinary teams on the integration of mechanical, electrical, and electronic systems into bespoke lighting products.
  • Supporting the integration of lighting electronics, control systems, and electromechanical components where required.
  • Working closely with project managers, production, procurement, suppliers, and installation teams to ensure successful project execution.
  • Contributing technical solutions for customer-specific project requirements.
  • Continuously expanding your knowledge in mechanical engineering, lighting technology, electronics, and product development.
  • Following projects throughout their entire lifecycle—from concept development and engineering through prototyping, production support, installation, commissioning, and final handover.
  • Reporting directly to the Director of Design & Engineering while working within multidisciplinary project teams.

Profil

You are curious, practical, and enjoy transforming creative concepts into manufacturable products.

Ideally, you have:

  • HTL, FH, Technical University, or equivalent education in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Industrial Design, Product Development, or a related technical discipline.
  • Experience creating detailed engineering drawings and technical documentation.
  • Good knowledge of SolidWorks and AutoCAD.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a pragmatic approach.
  • Ability to work independently as well as within multidisciplinary teams.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Professional working proficiency in English (German is considered an advantage).
  • Interest or experience in electronics, electromechanical systems, or lighting technology is considered a plus.
  • A willingness to continuously learn and develop new technical skills.
  • Flexibility, commitment, and a solution-oriented mindset.
  • Willingness to travel occasionally.
  • Valid EU work permit.
  • Driving licence is an advantage.

Whether you are starting your engineering career or already have professional experience, we encourage you to apply.
